New up cycled signs!

Construction, Festivals

For a while now I have been meaning to create some extra signs for the stall – it helps having a little bit of information to give passers by an idea of what will be inside. And to follow with the up cycling-ness of oo arh! I decided I would make my own from scratch!

I did a bit of research and came across some great blogs:

and decided I was going to go for it!

In true up cycling fashion, I asked Alex to bring some wood home from work – helicopter parts are often shipped in large wooden boxes which are then discarded, so what better use for them!? So I started designing my lettering and words and finally settled on ‘Unique, Handmade, Up Cycled, Fashion’ on a white back ground in red letters so they stand out against the white marquee!

Alex, very kindly, did as asked and brought back some really great pieces for me to work with! I chopped them up to fit my chosen words – yep, that’s right I used an electric saw! My Granddads would be proud of me!

I then stained the wood with Creocote – can you see the difference? I layered up coats and the wood took it really nicely!

I then applied Vaseline around the corners, edges and some in the centre of each signs…

And went at them with white spray paint! I did two layers again, so that the colour was bold!

Next was the turn of the electric sander! Oh yes! Sanding away the paint to bring back the wood …and I think they turned our rather good…

Alex drilled some holes on the tops of the signs so they could be hung up on the metal sign!

He had a bit of an audience too!

Back to my comfort zone – I arranged my sheets on the wood (after flipping the images of course!) and used a paint brush to wash some water over them…

I used the handle of my fabric scissors to rub through the black ink – TADAH!

Very faint but always helpful to have a guide! And the i could start painting!

I am so chuffed with how they have turned out – I love the different sizes and different finishes with the paint and wood!

I also did a distance test…well, the length of our flat test to see if the writing could be seen far off and well, I’ll let you be the judge! Can’t wait to see them up in festival season!
